It differs from <a href=\"https:\/\/betterme.world\/articles\/hormonal-belly-woman\/\">subcutaneous fat<\/a> in location (intra-abdominal as opposed to just under the skin) and characteristics. Visceral fat is located around vital organs such as the liver, pancreas, intestines, and kidneys.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0It is metabolically active and produces hormones that can negatively affect the body (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/visceral-fat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess visceral fat increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
